Nearly all of Kennedy's successors have been unabashed football fans, particularly Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford (who played at Michigan), Ronald Reagan (who played at Eureka College, and as an actor, played Notre Dame legend George Gipp), both Bushes, and Bill Clinton.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon left the White House to attend the “Big Shootout” in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to watch number-two Arkansas and number-one Texas. That Texas team won the national championship under head coach Darrell K. Royal. It was men like Royal and some of the players on his title teams in 1969 and the 1970s, such as James Street, Bobby Mitchell, and Freddie Steinmark, who helped to distinguish Texas as something beyond the place where Kennedy was killed.

The football team and the football people who made the biggest impact on the national perception of the city of Dallas were Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, and the 1970s Dallas Cowboys. That team and their dynasty in the '70s changed the reputation of an entire city. (The TV show Dallas helped, too.)

This morning, thousands of people drive down that internationally famous confluence of three streets—past the Sixth Floor Museum, south of the fence that previously marked the “Grassy Knoll,” to exit ramp 428B for Interstate 35E South, then moving over for Interstate 30E and the long line of cars headed to “Fair Park” and the Texas–Oklahoma football game.

Fair Park

Part of the charm of the Texas–Oklahoma game is where it's played—at the State Fair of Texas during the State Fair. It makes for a wonderful scene, as well as horrendous traffic and the seventh level of Dante's Parking Lot. The only relief from the traffic is that the Texas fans have no faith in the Longhorns coming close to defeating their most hated rival, so many are staying home; less faith means less traffic.

The secondary and online ticket market for the 110th edition of this game is depressed because practically no one believes this game will be worth watching. Fans could buy tickets for about $35 apiece online the night before the game; face value is over $100. The University of Texas athletic department returned thousands of tickets to the Cotton Bowl a few days before the game because they were not sold. When the two teams are good, a ticket can cost well over $1,000, and ushers are always rumored to accept a few bills to allow fans to walk in without a ticket.
